Why Your Support Matters
Old Snowmass sits beneath some of the darkest skies in the entire country—skies where up to 5,000 stars can shine overhead in a single night. In contrast, many urban areas now see fewer than 100. Light pollution is rapidly shrinking access to the night sky, and its impacts go far beyond astronomy.
Nocturnal wildlife depends on darkness for survival. Plants and humans rely on natural circadian rhythms that are disrupted by artificial light. And our sense of heritage, wonder, and connection to the universe begins with an unaltered night sky.
The DarkSky Initiative in Old Snowmass is working to preserve and protect this precious resource. We are on the path to becoming the first designated DarkSky International Community in the Roaring Fork Valley—setting an example for neighboring towns and cities.
Your donation directly supports:
- Community education about smart, low-impact lighting
- Advocacy and collaboration with Pitkin County to uphold lighting codes
- Tools and outreach to help homeowners reduce light trespass and protect wildlife
- Efforts to preserve safety while minimizing pollution through shielded, ground-directed lighting
- Long-term conservation of a dark night sky for residents, visitors, and the wild kingdom that depends on it
By giving today, you help ensure our community can continue to see star clusters, planets, and constellations with the naked eye—an experience that is becoming ever more rare. You help protect biodiversity, energy resources, local heritage, and the magic of a true night sky.
